9 Tips for Finding Manifesting Health and Happiness – starting RIGHT NOW.
Tip #5: Take a Break from Ego Positioning
When was the last time you had FUN at a work-related party or mixer?
Be honest now; not the type of fun that goes with collecting tons of business cards or hob-nobbing with big names in your industry.
I mean pure, unadulterated fun. The kind of good time that might involve:
- Meaningful exchanges, unabashed grinning, and infectious laughter.
- Saying what you really think and attracting like minds because of it.
- Telling and listening to stories about everything from the miraculous to the mundane – as divulged by people just like you and me.
- Sharing your secret talents – so people leave knowing about YOU and not just what you do (i.e., you’re a professional, but you’re also a sportsman, a nature lover, and you play bass on weekends.)
- Opening your mind and really listening to/understanding what’s important to the people whom you meet.
Imagine if you just stopped obsessively chronicling your company’s successes to whoever was within earshot. Imagine if you ceased to define yourself by accomplishments and status symbols.
Imagine if you introduced yourself at the next big networking event by saying:
“Hi, my name is __________. I’m a husband, father, and member of this community.”
What do you think people would DO?
I’ll tell you exactly what they’ll do, because I tried it for myself.
Back in the day, when I owned my own trading firm, I made regular appearances at corporate cocktail parties. And one day I just got so tired of the posturing and phony conversations, that I just said to heck with it. Instead of delivering my usual elevator speech, I introduced myself to people in the manner described above.
“Hi, my name is David Bohl. I’m a husband, father, and member of this community.”
And then I watched, mystified, as the circle of people around me slowly broke open and began to dissipate. I was left with maybe 3 or 4 folks standing there. The look on their faces was one of sheer admiration.
“Wow. What you just did was really cool,” I was told. “I envy that you have the confidence to be completely honest!”
That night, I learned that just being myself and throwing it all on the table proved a far more worthwhile exercise than any of the surface networking I’d been doing prior.
That night, I made just a handful of connections – but they were deep connections with people who shared my values. Some of those people have remained my friends to this day.
Remember that life goes much deeper than your professional title and how much money you earn. We are all just human beings – fallible, vulnerable.
Remind yourself every day: “My work is not my entire identity.”
