Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s come in all shapes and sizes but what matters is what something is, not what someone calls it. You might be labeled the Soccer mom or the worker mom or even the lazy mom but it doesn’t matter – you are a mom regardless of what someone ‘labels’ you as. Besides you are the only one who knows what is best for you and your family so don’t let anyone label you or try to tell you what you should be doing! Happy Mother’s Day.

We’ve all heard of “Soccer Moms” (a.k.a. the Stay-at-home Moms), “Worker Moms” (full- and part-time), and “Alpha Moms”. Many of us have heard the term “Beta Moms” (otherwise known as “Slacker Moms”).

But how many of us have heard of “I Want it All Moms”, “Coach Moms”, Lieutenant Moms”, “Sapphire Moms”, “Phantom Moms”, “China Doll Moms”, “You’re My Trophy Moms”, “Forever Moms”, “Controlling Moms”, and “American Express Moms”?

What is one to make of all these characterizations of Mothers? As Juliet said in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:

‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

What matters is what something is, not what someone calls it.

So Moms, don’t let anyone label you or tell you what you should be doing or aspiring to. Only you truly know what’s best for you and yours.

Have a Happy Mother’s Day.
